JSOnline.Com: City panel endorses electric bus system: $300 million Milwaukee Connector project draws speakers both for and against

The Milwaukee Connector is one step closer to becoming reality. This transit system has been endorsed by the Common Council, Mayor Tom Barrett, business leaders, downtown neighborhood organizations, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), and the bus drivers union. Supporters argue that a new, efficient system is needed to improve transportation and attract economic development. Challengers, such as Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, suggest that the Milwaukee Connector would reduce service by eliminating existing bus lines, using fewer bus stops, and requiring riders to transfer between buses and the Connector.

The Milwaukee Connector would link downtown attractions with surrounding neighborhoods, UWM, and Miller Park. Larry Sandler, writer for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has more to say about this controversial issue. Click here to read the entire article>>>

Business Journal of Milwaukee: Downtown parking push

Real estate developers and commercial brokers say incentives are needed to provide the public with cheaper and more plentiful parking in downtown Milwaukee. This movement was established as a result of the city's recent decision to create a tax-incremental financing district to provide for a parking structure for Manpower, Inc. Real estate professionals have raised concerns with the city that the office market will continue to stagnate unless the parking issue is addressed. Proponents have raised two solutions to the growing problem: Form a parking fund to lessen parking costs for companies moving downtown and to create a parking authority to administer parking structures in key locations. Pete Millard, writer for The Business Journal of Milwaukee, presents this growing problem and raises issues from both sides - the developers/brokers and the city government.
