JSOnline: Mayor talks up streetcars - Barrett tells Common Council committee that system would boost bus ridership

During the past month, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett stated that streetcars would help the Milwaukee County Transit System. Barrett suggested that streetcars would "inject energy into the system" and that the operating costs would be too small to threaten bus funding. Under-used federal aid will help pay most of the bill. The proposed program would operate modern streetcars on a three-mile loop; linking downtown and express buses to major job centers. Opponents to this program include County Executive Scott Walker who says the streetcars would compete with the transit system. Larry Sandler, writer for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel explains both sides to this controversial issue. Click here to read more about the future of Milwaukee's public transportation options>>>
